Chunky Fabric YoYo Christmas Tree Tutorial

Sorry about the late post, but it has been a busy day :). Anyways, for this Tutorial Thursday  I am going to show you how to make this charming Chunky Fabric YoYo Christmas Tree.

Here's What You'll Need:
  • Pattern Paper
  • A Round Item with a Diameter of 16" for a Template ( Mine was just a food tray I found at the dollar store)
  • 1 1/2 Yards Total of Fabric
  • Clothes Pins
  • Hot Glue Gun
  • Glue Stick
  • Cardboard
  • Pen or Pencil
  • Ruler or Drawing Compass
  • Acrylic Paint
  • Iron
  • Ironing Board
  • Paintbrush
  • Scissors
  • Thread
  • Hand Sewing Needle
  • Cap of a Spray Can
  • Optional: Trim

Step 1: Take whatever round item you chose, and trace around it onto your pattern paper.

Step 2: Grab your ruler or drawing compass, and draw a circle 1/2" around from the initial circle. Repeat this until you have 13 circles.

Step 3: Cut the circle out on the first line.

Step 4: Pin the circle pattern onto your fabric and cut it out.

Step 5: Take your circle pattern and cut on the second line. Then repeat Step 4 until you have 13 fabric circles cut out from each line. Next, I numbered each of the circles with sticky notes so I could keep track of the order and size, which is optional.

Step 6: Pick up one of the fabric circles and bring it to your ironing board. Press down 1/4" on all of the sides, toward the wrong side of the fabric.

Step 7: Thread your needle and start a basting stitch in the middle of the pressed down edge.

Step 8: While basting, pull and gather completely. Then, tie the remaining thread into a knot. And Presto! You have a finished YoYo! Repeat steps 6-8 until yo have 13 YoYos.

Step 9: Next, for the stand, take a piece of cardboard and draw a circle that is 5 1/2" in diameter. Then, cut it out.

Step 10: Get your paint and paintbrush and completely cover the cardboard on one side. Wait until it has dried entirely, then paint the other side.

Step 11: Grab the largest YoYo and with you hot glue gun, position the glue onto the middle, around the gathered edge. Quickly take the spray can cap ( or whatever cap you chose) and press the top firmly onto the glue.

Step 12: Next, spread glue all over the bottom of the cap and place it down in the middle of the tree stand.

Step 13: After the cap is in place on the stand, get the second largest YoYo and coat the glue again onto the middle, around the gathered edge. Then, place it onto the first YoYo, positioning it in the middle. Repeat this step until all the YoYos are in place.

Step 14: Once all the YoYos are stacked in place, take your hot glue gun and start taking glue in a few spots under each YoYo. Continue gluing the YoYos together until is is completely secure.

Step 15 (Optional): Grab your trim and glue it onto the 7th YoYo down from the top.

And.....

Congrats! Your Christmas Tree is Finished!
